Sudden Unexpected Death on Infants and Children (SUDIC)
SUDIC stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infants and Childhood, referring to the unexpected and unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby or child. These tragic events are rare but deeply impactful, prompting thorough investigations to understand possible causes and ensure appropriate safeguarding measures.
The SUDIC process involves a multi-agency response, including healthcare professionals, police, and social care, to sensitively support the family while gathering information to determine the cause of death and identify any learning to prevent future occurrences. The process is guided by statutory frameworks such as Working Together to Safeguard Children and aims to balance compassion with the need for a robust review.
